I first met the peony during my artist residency at Vermont Studio Center, a remote artist retreat in the hills of Vermont. Peony flowers were everywhere ~ like bougainvillea in the Florida Keys ~ throughout the quaint town of Johnson, where peony bushes graced every yard. I am reminded of that wonderful time of inspiration and renewal each time I visit my portfolio. As native Floridian, my knowledge of this flower comes later in life; however am overjoyed when persons whose love of this bloom take them back to their youth, and share their memories while in my studio.
Love… I think you can spell it P E O N Y.

We tend to take for granted our beautiful days in paradise... until a “bad day” of windy and rainy conditions occurs. Here’s a flashback to the picture perfect, calm days of early December, from the vantage point of a Hinkley from Barton and Gray.
What years of experience as pro photographer has taught me is: you never know what you’ll be asked to photograph, events are unpredictable, and you better have confidence in your gear and your technical ability to get the shot. Plus have a little luck. And you probably don’t want to do something for the first time when you are on assignment.
Challenge means opportunity… how do I stop the action of an airplane flying in the dark? The twilight airshow at Ocean Reef Club was one such opportunity. Thinking an offshore vantage point would work, with Florida Keys sunset as backdrop, to top it off calm seas and excellent Captain Nick aboard Barton and Gray’s Hinkley “American Pie”. It all came together. Thanks to everyone who made it happen. ESPECIALLY THOSE BRAVE PILOTS! |
